How to Become a Director

The Board of Directors is the governing body of the Haliburton Highlands Chamber of Commerce and consists of 13 members who serve a 2 year term. A term on the Board of Directors begins at the Annual General Meeting held each fall, and runs through to the following Annual

The Executive Committee includes the President, Vice-President, Treasurer/Secretary and two other members of the Board of Directors.

The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors are business advocates from diverse backgrounds and who have a passion for business.

Interested individuals should be:
* Community minded with an interest in local businesses
* Possess leadership qualities and are unbiased
* Have an entrepreneurial spirit
* Have previous experience with a board (an asset but not mandatory)
* Can commit to a minimum of one meeting a month
* Can commit to a minimum of a two year term
* Are creative thinkers with fresh ideas
(Interested applicants must be a Chamber Member who is in good standing)

What make a Successful Board:

 The Board has a unity of purpose
 The Board has a clear policy manual to help deal with Board matters
 The Board moves smoothly towards agreed upon goals
 All Board members attend meetings with an open mind, have no preconceived personal agendas and are willing to hear new ideas.
 Board members agree to disagree with no lingering feelings. There is a sense of “team” built upon fairness, trust, respect and understanding
 Members understand their role and responsibility
 A positive relationship exists within the Board and external to the Board.
 All Board members feel they have a say in the direction of the program that reflects the specific community goals.
 The Board Stays within its governance and does not stray into areas that should be the responsibility of operational people; and
 There is a sense of learning, of contribution, of self worth and of accomplishment.
