Chamber Anniversary & Sign By-Law Garner Media Coverage

Both of our local papers have featured coverage of Chamber affairs over the last week.

In the first instance, the Minden Times looks at our 75th anniversary year and talks about the recent growth in the organization.

Chamber of commerce is 75 years old and still growing
Minden Times – January 13th, 2010

The Haliburton Highlands Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its 75th anniversary and it’s doing so with renewed zeal.

The chamber has more than 330 members, almost 100 of which have joined in the last year, and that number is still growing.

In all, there are about 600 businesses in Haliburton County.

“That’s phenomenal,” chamber president Nick Lawrence said last week, pointing out that having more than half an area’s businesses as chamber members is a rate that is basically unheard of.

Meanwhile, the Echo has coverage of the advocacy work we’ve undertaken in regards to the new county sign by-law.

Chamber not keen on sign bylaw
Haliburton Echo – January 12th, 2010

The Haliburton Highlands Chamber of Commerce has concerns that upcoming changes to the county’s sign bylaw may have negative affects for area businesses.

While county council passed them in 2008, the changes will not come into effect until 2013, following a five-year grace period.

“At this point in time, we don’t have any issue,” said Maria Micallef, the chamber’s administrative co-ordinator.

However, when the new bylaw comes into effect in three years time, Micallef said she wonders what the effects will be for businesses that advertise along county roads and a survey recently put out to the chamber’s 300 members asks just that question.

Moon Shadows Receives International Recognition

Chamber Board member Eric Thompson and his partner Carol have much to be proud of these days. Their Moon Shadows Estate Winery has received a prestigious accolade in the form of a gold medal from the InterVin International Wine Awards for their popular Black Currant table wine. The Echo has more details…

Haliburton winery wins gold in world contest
Haliburton Echo – November 17th, 2009

Last week Moon Shadows Estates took a twirl in the spotlight when its popular Black Currant table wine captured the gold medal in the prestigious InterVin International Wine Awards. The wine won in the fruit/dessert wine category. (Moon Shadows also sells dessert wines, but this particular Black Currant vintage is a table wine.)

Moon Shadows Estates Winery owners Eric and Carol Thompson were pleasantly surprised when they were notified last week.

“We’re pretty happy,” said Carol.

“There were over 750 different wines from around the world, and there were only 26 gold medal winners,” said Eric. “We were in fruit and dessert wines category, and looking down the list of winners we were the only non-grape wine to get a gold.”

Chamber Member’s Project Profiled in The Globe & Mail

Local Chamber member Marc Shroetterowner of the Crowne Gallery – received coverage in the Globe & Mail earlier this month for a special project that he’s undertaken. Marc has put out a request for artists – professional, amateur and schoolchildren – to paint a small scene representing “home” which he intends to have sent to our troops in Afghanistan. A snippet from the Globe & Mail article by Roy MacGregor…

Ready, aye, ready: Exhibit shows soldiers who made mark on history
Globe & Mail – November 2nd, 2009

Mr. Shroetter is working with the local Legion and hopes, eventually, to deliver 4,000 postcards to Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.

So far, he has collected original postcards from the area and some from out West. There are cards showing farms being plowed, sap being collected in a sugar bush, fall colours in the Canadian bush.

“They’re rough,” Mr. Shroetter says, “but they’re not hokey. It’s kind of like hanging your kids’ pictures on the refrigerator door.”

Chamber of commerce is defining new role for itself among businesses
Minden Times – October 21st, 2009

“I’m often asked, ‘what does the chamber do for me?’ and the reality is the chamber does a lot for you, a lot of it behind the scenes,” said Lawrence, addressing about 50 members.

Lawrence said that the members garner many benefits from involvement with other small business owners in the area.

“But membership does the most when you get involved in the chamber,” said Lawrence.
